Scheduled and designed around the plays and activities at the Festival, this unique series of classes was created, not just for students of theatre and Shakespeare, but for students of life—for all of us who enjoy learning more about our experiences and surroundings.
Please note that some of the classes include tickets to various plays and the Backstage Tour. If your chosen workshops don't include the plays you want, you can purchase additional tickets for you or for those who are with you. University credit through Southern Utah University is available for most classes.
For all emerging thespians! Professional actors and educators lead this exciting in-residence theatre experience. Students gain invaluable acting skills through workshops including voice, stage combat, improvisation, and scene work. The week culminates in a student-acted, public performance on one of the Festival’s stages. Tuition includes tickets to the Festival plays, chaperoned dormitory accommodations, and all meals.
Specifically designed for older high school students and college undergrads, this ten-day intensive course builds upon acquired skills needed for auditioning and acting in Shakespeare’s plays. Festival instructors Ann Tully and Larry Whitesell immerse students in text analysis and performance techniques. Professional coaching by Festival actors enhances the experience, culminating in a student-acted, public performance on one of the Festival’s stages. Tuition includes tickets to five plays (the sixth, Great Expectations, is optional) and chaperoned dormitory accommodations.
Because an actor’s training is never finished, this ten-day intensive is an advanced study of Shakespeare’s works, expanding on techniques learned in Actor Training I. Under the direction of Ann Tully and Larry Whitesell, students receive college level training in the art of scene work, text analysis, voice, and stage combat, and more. Festival technicians guide students through a hands-on learning experience of designing, building, and running a production. Insight into lighting, costumes, sets, and stage management is enhanced by working alongside our technical crew. Students even have the rare opportunity to watch a Festival production from backstage! Tuition includes housing and tickets to Macbeth and Pride and Prejudice.
An essential class for any educator/director! Learn the secrets and acquire the tools necessary to present a play from the technical aspect. Festival technicians create a hands-on learning experience of designing, building, and running a production. Special sessions include how to create a show with limited resources. Tuition includes a ticket to The Merchant of Venice.
Festival Education Director Michael Bahr explores methods of developing and implementing Shakespeare and theatre arts programs as a tool for varied elementary curriculum. Topics include instructional games, script adaptation, and how to mount a play with limited time and resources. Tuition includes a ticket to Much Ado about Nothing, classroom materials, and special sessions with Festival actors. Participants will also attend a performance of the Elementary Shakespeare Showcase.

This class is designed for educators and directors who are interested in studying acting in and directing Shakespeare’s works. Coaching and special discussions with Festival actors enhance the experience, culminating in the opportunity of performing on one of the Festival’s stages. A very popular self-paced class, Shakespeare Plays enables almost anyone to earn college credit by seeing all six plays at our summer festival! In addition to the productions, participants attend play orientations, literary seminars, and The Greenshow and submit feedback on provided forms. Students must purchase theatre tickets separately.
A variation on our Shakespeare Plays class, Shakespeare Forum allows patrons to select individual plays and receive credit for each. Theatre for the young and young at heart! Our resident youth theatre offers year-round workshops for students from eight to sixteen years old, teaching the essential building blocks for theatre performance. Classes on improvisation, collaboration, movement, and voice are integrated into producing a show for the entire community. Summer sessions focus on Shakespearean scene work, while spring and fall sessions present fully mounted productions of Suessical: the Musical or A Christmas Carol.
