The Utah Shakespearean Festival's New American Playwright's Project is devoted to discovering and encouraging American playwrights, established and emerging, who write dramatic works that explore our American experience, spirit, and heritage, with special emphasis given to Western playwrights, themes, and characters.
The new scripts selected will be given three rehearsed staged readings with the Festival professional actors and directors before an audience, allowing feedback for the playwright's further development of the script.
The project is an advocate for American playwrights regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, physical disabilty, sexual orientation, or economic status. All American playwrights are welcome.
In addition to presenting staged readings of the selected scripts, every season the project will be committed to presenting a world premiere production of one of the selected scripts. A new play festival is planned for future Utah Shakespearean Festival seasons.
- All entries for the 2009 season must be received between July 1 and December 1, 2008.
- Only one submission per playwright per year is allowed.
- The cast size must be no more than eight actors; submit a doubling plan if your script has more than eight characters.
- The following must be submitted with each script: a cover page with the title and playwright's name only, bound into the script; a one paragraph biography of the playwright; a brief synopsis (two paragraphs maximum) of the play; a self-addressed-stamped envelope if acknowledgement of receipt is desired.
- Plays should be original, un-produced, full-length, bound scripts that are finished enough to profit from a workshop reading by professional actors but still open to revision. We do not accept synopses, musicals, screenplays, collaborations, one acts, translations, adaptations, children's theatre, or plays by multiple authors.

- Scripts may not exceed two-hour performance time or no more than ninety pages of dialogue.
- The Festival is especially interested in material that explores characters and ideas that focus on our Western experience, spirit, and heritage. We will also accept scripts that focus on "classic" characters, subjects, and themes such as Shakespeare and other figures of historical, literary, or artistic significance.
- After we receive scripts, they will be forwarded to our play selection committee. All authors will be notifed after March 15, 2009 regarding the status of their plays.
- Scripts will not be returned.
- The New American Playwrights Project consists of play readings only. Your manuscript, if selected, will receive a full staged reading with the Festival performing company.
- If your script is selected, you must be willing to provide that in all subsequent productions the Utah Shakespearean Festival receives credit in all programs and publicity material. The appropriate format would read: "Original reading by the Utah Shakespearean Festival, Cedar City, Utah."
- If your script is selected, you must be able to be in residence at the Festival for one week of rehearsal and performance in August. The Festival will provide transportation, lodging, and complimentary tickets to each of the summer season productions presented during your stay.
All scripts should be submitted to:
