Pearl Bailey, an award-winning American actress, singer, and special delegate to the United Nations, agrees to be interviewed on the Renata Jackson television show in February 1987. Pearl was a major entertainer who was a trailblazer for African-American women, yet Renata, a liberal, young African-American woman, feels Pearl isn’t doing enough to highlight and discuss racial and social issues of the time. As the interview continues, the audience learns more about Bailey’s amazing life through flashbacks. Ultimately, both Bailey and Renata share some of their stories and reasoning for their strong personalities and convictions. Yet, when Renata continues to push Pearl to be more of an activist, she responds the only way she knows how—through her music.
