Set in 1930s Budapest, She Loves Me is a warm, intimate musical that follows the employees of Maraczek’s Parfumerie. The story centers on Georg Nowack, the shop’s capable assistant manager, and Amalia Balash, a determined young woman who secures a job there by sheer persistence. From their very first meeting, Georg and Amalia clash, sparking a workplace rivalry defined by bickering and mutual annoyance.
Unbeknownst to both, they are actually deeply in love—just not with the person standing in front of them. Both have been participating in a “lonely hearts” correspondence, exchanging anonymous, soulful letters with a secret pen pal they each refer to as “Dear Friend.” While they trade insults at the perfume counter, they trade poetry and dreams through the mail, each convinced that their correspondent is their perfect soulmate.
The tension comes to a head when Amalia arranges a meeting with her “Dear Friend” at a cafe. Georg arrives first and is shocked to discover that his romantic pen pal is actually his workplace nemesis. Initially cruel and dismissive to hide his identity, Georg eventually has a change of heart. After Amalia falls ill from the disappointment of being “stood up,” Georg visits her at home with a gift of vanilla ice cream. He begins to see her vulnerability, while she begins to see his kindness.
As the Christmas season approaches, the shop is filled with subplots involving their coworkers: the philandering Steven Kodaly, the unlucky-in-love Ilona Ritter, and the anxious family man Sipos. Eventually, Georg reveals his identity to Amalia in a heartwarming finale. The two realize that the love they found in letters exists in the real world, proving that true affection often hides behind the most unexpected faces. It is a story of looking past first impressions to find the “Dear Friend” within.
